Tell us about your PROGRAM

At James A. Haley VA, we have a 52-week residency program that allows residents to get experience in acute care, ambulatory care, HIV, OPAT, and long-term care (Spinal Cord Injury/Nursing Home).

What makes your program UNIQUE?

We are a 499-bed veterans' hospital with a nursing home and long-term care Spinal Cord Injury Unit, making the cases we see in infectious diseases unique. Additionally, we live in sunny Florida, so we treat several patients with non-tuberculosis Mycobacterium and water-borne illnesses.

What opportunities are there for RESEARCH and QUALITY IMPROVEMENT in your program?

Our program requires one major quality improvement residency project per year for pharmacy residents. However, we highly encourage research and publications with our ASP Physician Champion also being the lead in VA ID research..

What QUALITIES are you looking for in a successful trainee?

We are looking for candidates who are hard-working, with strong time management skills, have a positive attitude, and are passionate about Infectious Diseases.

What CAREER paths have past trainees pursued, and how does your program support trainees in finding job opportunities?

We offer job application preparation and mentorship through the VA to assist residents with networking and finding job opportunities. Our residents have taken a variety of Positions following residency, including VA Infectious Diseases Program Leads, Civilian Antimicrobial Stewardship/OPAT program managers, MSL industry jobs, and acute care pharmacy positions.

MAD-ID Training Program Highlight

This series highlights ID pharmacy training programs, including PGY2 ID residency and ID fellowship programs that send trainees to the MAD-ID Annual Meeting. We provide an opportunity for program directors to give insights into their offerings that mean most to prospective trainees.

If you are interested in highlighting your ID pharmacy training program, please contact David Ha at dha@stanfordhealthcare.org.
