Tell us about your PROGRAM
Huntsville Hospital is the flagship institution of the HH Health System and is one of the largest not-for-profit community hospital systems in the nation. The PGY-2 infectious diseases program began in 2018 and was accredited by ASHP in 2019. The program offers the resident ample opportunity to hone in on microbiology and infectious diseases principles throughout the year, understand the framework of antimicrobial stewardship in the community hospital setting, and develop leadership skills through precepting learners and subcommittee involvement. Emphasis is placed on developing a well-rounded pharmacy clinician who excels in infectious diseases.
What opportunities are there for RESEARCH and QUALITY IMPROVEMENT in your program?
Each year our ID PGY2 residents conduct research and present it at the annual MAD-ID meeting. Former projects include an evaluation of S. aureus BSI in a large community hospital and an evaluation of the diagnosis and treatment of hospital-onset CDI at a large community hospital.
What QUALITIES are you looking for in a successful trainee?
Qualities sought after in a successful trainee include good time management and organization, a motivated self-directed learner, and a positive attitude.
What CAREER paths have past trainees pursued and how does your program support trainees in finding job opportunities?
Former trainees have successfully achieved board-certification in infectious diseases and pursued infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship positions within academic, community, and VA hospital settings. The program administration are involved in several ID organizations and help connect residents with their network across the country.
