Updated: 6 days ago

Program Director: Elisabeth Chandler, PharmD, BCIDP

Tell us about your PROGRAM

The Lee Health ID PGY2 program is based out of Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL, with rotation offerings across the Lee Health system. With 4 adult hospitals and one pediatric hospital, this PGY2 program provides expansive opportunities through ID consult, antimicrobial stewardship, AMS administration and leadership, critical care, microbiology, and elective rotations.

What makes your program UNIQUE?

While the resident will gain many skills throughout the residency year, a particular strength of our program is building on medical writing skills through our CME and ACPE accredited newsletter, the Dose, and through the completion of the medical writing certificate program. Additionally, our program allows for ample opportunity to develop leadership skills through the antimicrobial stewardship program administration and leadership rotation. Graduates from this ID PGY2 program will have the skills to successfully lead a health-system antimicrobial stewardship program.

What opportunities are there for RESEARCH and QUALITY IMPROVEMENT in your program?

Various research and quality improvement opportunities are available and tailored to the resident interest area. Past projects include implementation of required indication on antifungal and antiviral orders, an evaluation of oral antibiotics for gram negative bacteremia, and implementation of a febrile neutropenia prophylaxis protocol.

What QUALITIES are you looking for in a successful trainee?

The most important qualities for a successful trainee including intrinsic motivation, curiosity, and critical thinking skills. ID pharmacists often are in leadership positions within the antimicrobial stewardship program, so relationship building, compassion, and integrity are key.

What CAREER paths have past trainees pursued and how does your program support trainees in finding job opportunities?

Graduates of the Lee Health ID PGY2 have gone on to various clinical and leadership roles. Some of these include ID, pediatric, and emergency medicine clinical specialists, antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists, an FDA health scientist, academia, and a chief operating officer.
