Tell us about your PROGRAM
Carolinas Medical Center (CMC), the flagship hospital of Atrium Health, is a 951-bed academic teaching hospital with multiple residency programs (pharmacy, medical, and dental) and specialty services. Our PGY2 ID residency program affords residents the opportunity to pursue their specific interests within ID and gain experience with multidisciplinary collaboration across our health care system.
What makes your program UNIQUE?
The PGY2 ID resident at CMC has the opportunity to interact with an extensive network of ID/antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists, including 12 ID pharmacists in the Charlotte region and 15 additional ID pharmacists across our enterprise. Our extensive network of ID pharmacists and health care facilities ensures that the ID PGY2 resident gets a diverse, well-rounded training experience.
What opportunities are there for RESEARCH and QUALITY IMPROVEMENT in your program?
Our residency program includes opportunities for a research project, medication use evaluation, enterprise-wide drug monograph, and institutional protocol development. Our most recent resident, Caroline Rosario, presented her research project, intravenous vs. oral antibiotic stepdown therapy for the treatment of Streptococcus pneumoniae bloodstream infections, at MAD-ID.
What QUALITIES are you looking for in a successful trainee?
A successful PGY2 ID resident at CMC would be someone who is curious, motivated to learn, passionate about patient care, and collaborative.
What CAREER paths have past trainees pursued and how does your program support trainees in finding job opportunities?
Prior CMC PGY2 ID residents practice in antimicrobial stewardship, inpatient consulting services, and the pharmaceutical industry; however, our program affords residents the opportunity to pursue their interests in other areas of practice, including immunocompromised ID, pediatric ID, HIV management, and OPAT services. Our preceptor group supports the resident during their job search by hosting a mock interview, providing guidance during the application/interview process, and via networking.
MAD-ID Training Program Highlight
This series highlights ID pharmacy training programs, including PGY2 ID residency and ID fellowship programs that send trainees to the MAD-ID Annual Meeting. We provide an opportunity for program directors to give insights into their offerings that mean most to prospective trainees.
