Tell us about your PROGRAM
UK King's Daughters is a 455-bed community hospital that serves patients from the greater Ashland area, the majority of eastern Kentucky, and southeastern Ohio. The program offers opportunities in inpatient care, outpatient care, and leadership.
What makes your program UNIQUE?
Opportunities for research and quality improvement projects are primarily focused on clinical practice and improving patient care. Recent research projects include comparing blood culture rapid diagnostics, evaluating the impact of a decentralized pharmacist on surgical prophylaxis, and determining the impact of pharmacist-led assessment of antibiotic prescriptions for discharge.
What opportunities are there for RESEARCH and QUALITY IMPROVEMENT in your program?
Our residents participate in innovative research and quality improvement initiatives that have a direct impact on patient care and antimicrobial practices across our health system. Current projects explore areas like the impact of MaineHealth clinical guidelines and automated microbiology comments, transitions of care initiatives to promote earlier oral antibiotic therapy, and outcomes and safety of long-term oral antimicrobial suppression for hardware-related infections.
What QUALITIES are you looking for in a successful trainee?
Successful trainee qualities include being self-motivated, organized, having critical thinking skills, and being a team player. Flexibility and being able to think outside the box are also important skills for trainees.
What CAREER paths have past trainees pursued, and how does your program support trainees in finding job opportunities?
Graduates have secured positions as infectious diseases/antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists. Program leaders discuss career opportunities with residents and support them through the job search process.
